About Installation
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* There is junk on the screen and the Install program has stopped.
What should I do?
A data read error sometimes looks like a strip of horizontal lines.
Try typing R (retry). Also see the section entitled "About Video
Problems."
* My computer indicates that I have enough disk space, but SPACE
ADVENTURE 2 will not install completely. Why not?
Programs such as Stacker that compress your files on the hard disk
may indicate that you have enough disk space to install SPACE
ADVENTURE 2 completely when you really do not. These programs report
on your disk space based on how much they are usually able to
compress your files. The files that SPACE ADVENTURE 2 copies to your
hard disk are already compressed and your disk compression program
will not be able to compress them further to give you more space.
Try to move or remove any files you don't need in order to make room
for SPACE ADVENTURE 2, then start the Install program from the
beginning.
* When I try typing INSTALL from the DOS prompt, my computer locks up.
What's wrong?
COMMAND.COM replacements such as 4DOS or NDOS have difficulty running
INSTALL.EXE when they are loaded as the primary shell (from the SHELL
statement in CONFIG.SYS). To fix this problem, type ZZZINST instead
of INSTALL. ZZZINST.BAT is located in the root directory of the
CD-ROM and should work fine. You can also run INSTALL.EXE through
Windows 3.1x (For Windows 95 refer to Windows 95 section.) Refer to
the Windows section of "How do I Install SPACE ADVENTURE 2" in
"Getting Started".
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ

* SPACE ADVENTURE 2 won't start or it freezes on the first screen.
What's wrong?
If your computer has 16 megabytes or more of total system RAM please
see About Hardware Compatibility.
Try making a system disk and reboot your computer from it. To make a
system disk, put a floppy disk in your A: drive (You cannot use your
B: drive for this!) and type FORMAT A: /S. An example CONFIG.SYS for
your system disk would look like this:
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=20
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DEVICE=C:\CDROM\CDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001
Replace the last line with the actual CD-ROM interface driver for
your system (if you have a SCSI CD-ROM drive you will probably need
two device lines). The following is an example AUTOEXEC.BAT for your
system disk:
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSD001
If there are any specific commands needed to make your sound card
work, also include them in your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. (e.g.
Pro Audio's need MVSOUND.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS, Sound Blaster 16s
need a SET BLASTER=(something) and a SBCONFIG.EXE or DIAGNOSE.EXE in
the AUTOEXEC.BAT, Gravis UltraSound's need ULTRINIT.SYS in the
CONFIG.SYS)
If you need more help with this please call technical support and
request the solving software conflicts FAX.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ

* I can use the keyboard with SPACE ADVENTURE 2, but my mouse doesn't
work. What should I do?
If you find that the cursor does not respond when you move the mouse
(exit the program by pressing <Alt-F4> or <Alt-X>), edit your
AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file and remove the command to run your
current mouse driver. Then reboot your computer. When you are back
to a DOS prompt, type CD \SPACE2 and press <Enter>. Then type MOUSE
and press <Enter>. If this solves the problem, you can modify the
mouse commands in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS file to use the
mouse driver supplied with SPACE ADVENTURE 2 instead of the one
currently being used by your system.
If you have a Mouse Systems mouse or Trackball, or a Mouse
Systems-compatible mouse, you may experience the hand pointer jumping
to the bottom left corner of the screen. If so, you are using a
version of the Mouse Systems mouse driver that is not compatible with
the Microsoft mouse standard. Please try the mouse driver that we
have provided by following the instructions above, and the mouse
should then work perfectly. If this does not work contact Mouse
Systems about a mouse driver upgrade.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
About Sound and Sound Devices
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* When I try to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2 I don't hear any music and I get
the message "Warning: Couldn't initialize music driver; Music output
disabled." What's wrong?
You may have configured SPACE ADVENTURE 2 for a different sound
device than the one you have. Run the SETUP.EXE program described
under Changing Program Defaults with Setup.
If the problem persists after you have followed the instructions
above, your sound card's I/O address has probably been reconfigured.
In order for SPACE ADVENTURE 2 to find your card, you must specify
the correct I/O address in the KA.CNF file. See MusicDevParams under
Changing Program Defaults without Setup for more information about
changing the KA.CNF file.
If the problem still persists after you have checked your sound
card's correct address and changed the MusicDevParams default, it's
likely that your sound card and another device (such as a CD-ROM
drive or scanner) may be sharing the same I/O address. Write down
the current configuration of all of the device cards in your
computer. Try changing some of the settings (jumpers or dip
switches) to various configurations until all of your programs work
correctly. If you wish, you can pull the peripheral cards out of
your computer and test just your sound card with SPACE ADVENTURE 2.
If a conflict exists, this should resolve it. To find out which is
the conflicting card, add cards one by one until the problem returns.
The last card you re-installed is the problem card.
* When I try to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2 I don't get sound other than
music and I get the message "Warning: Couldn't initialize sound
driver; Sound output disabled." What's wrong?
Follow the advice given for the last question, but also check and
correct the IRQ Vector and DMA Channel for your sound device. See
also Changing Program Defaults with Setup.
* Nothing happens when I click on parts of the screen that are supposed
to play sounds. What's wrong?
The problem may be that you do not have enough RAM for certain sounds
to load and play. Try unloading memory-resident programs or device
drivers in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS files to free sufficient
memory to play those sounds.
If you have a sound card, but the sound is not working, make sure
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 is configured for the correct sound device. To see
the configuration, type MORE < KA.CNF from your SPACE2 directory and
press <Enter>. To edit the configuration file in Windows, click on
the SPACE2 Config icon. To change the configuration, run the
SETUP.EXE program described under Changing Program Defaults with
Setup. Run the test program supplied with your sound card to make
sure it is working. If there is a volume control dial, make sure
that it is turned up. If it is still not working, you may need to
reconfigure your sound card jumper board settings to another I/O
address or IRQ vector. If you've changed any of the factory settings
(switches, jumpers) on your sound card, you must let SPACE ADVENTURE
2 know these new settings. See also Changing Program Defaults with
Setup.
* I hear a constant popping sound from my speakers during speech and
sound effects, what can I do about it?
The refresh of the buffer to the sound card creates a microsecond
delay which you hear as a popping sound.
If you have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 card and you have the
Creative DOS Multimedia Architecture drivers loaded (CTSB16.SYS and
CTMMSYS.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS), then you can reconfigure SPACE
ADVENTURE 2 to take advantage of those extra drivers. Edit the
KA.CNF file by typing EDIT KA.CNF from the C:\SPACE2 directory.
Change the SoundDriver line to just SB16DIG.DRV with no path. Save
and exit the KA.CNF file by typing <Alt-F>, X and press <Enter>.
When you are at the C:\SPACE2 directory, again type COPY CON
SB16DIG.DRV and press <Enter>. You will now be at a blank line.
Type HELLO, press the F6 key, and then press <Enter>. If all went
well you should get a HELLO^Z and then a message saying 1 FILE(S)
COPIED. SPACE ADVENTURE 2 will now talk through your Creative DOS
Multimedia Architecture drivers.
If you do not have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 card, but do have
a sound card with mixer capabilities, you can reduce the treble
setting in the mixer program that came with your sound card. This
will reduce the high frequency of the popping sound.
* The digital audio (voice and sound effects) will not work on my
Gateway2000 Multimedia Sound Card that was manufactured by Media
Vision. What's wrong?
For some reason the Media Vision built Gateway2000 Multimedia sound
card may not create voice and sound effects after having entered
Windows 3.1x. Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and remove the line that says
"win" so that your computer will not go directly into Windows (DO NOT DO
THIS FOR WINDOWS 95!.) SPACE ADVENTURE 2 should play voice and sound
effects unless you return to Windows. Every time you enter Windows and
then wish to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2 you will have to reboot your computer.
Contact Gateway2000 for possible sound card driver upgrades.
* The digital audio (voice and sound effects) doesn't sound very good
on my Reveal SoundFX SC600 Wave 32 sound card. What's wrong?
The quality of the digital sound can be improved by changing into the
SOUNDFX directory created by the Reveal sound card installation.
From here run the SSINIT program. Once in the program choose the
Hardware option and then select the Advanced option. From this menu,
set the Treble slider to -20. Also make sure the treble and/or bass
boost switches on your speakers are OFF.
* There is a big volume difference between music and sound effects.
What can I do?
Sound cards that allow software volume control may have different
volume levels for sound and music. If you hear a noticeable
difference, you should run the volume control program (sometimes
called a mixer) that came with you sound card to equal out the
settings. You can also try changing settings in the "Advanced Sound
Options" in SETUP. See Changing Program Defaults with Setup.
* I can't seem to control the music and sound volume on my Reveal
SoundFX SC600 Wave 32 sound card using SSINIT. What's wrong?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 sets the music and sound volume to the appropriate
values on this card before it starts up.
* My computer freezes after running SPACE ADVENTURE 2 with my Reveal
SoundFX SC600 Wave 32 sound card. What's wrong?
You may need to update your sound drivers for Windows. To obtain
these drivers, please contact Reveal at (800) 4-REVEAL, FAX (818)
340-2379, or BBS (818) 704-6321.
* I'm not getting sound with my Digispeech Port-Able. What's wrong?
Check the date of your BMASTER.* driver files. If the files are
dated earlier than August, 1993, contact Digispeech or our BBS for an
update.
* I purchased a sound device after installing SPACE ADVENTURE 2. How
do I get the software to recognize my new piece of hardware?
Type SETUP at the DOS prompt from your C:\SPACE2 directory on your
hard drive and press <Enter>. Highlight the correct sound device and
press <Enter>, and SPACE ADVENTURE 2 will be reconfigured to work
with your new hardware.
* How can I use my Roland card for music and my other sound card for
digital sound?
1. Type SETUP at the DOS prompt from your C:\SPACE2 directory on your
hard drive and press <Enter>.
2. Highlight the selection for your additional sound card for
digitized sound and press <Enter>.
3. At the following menu, select "Advanced Sound Options" and press
<Enter>.
4. Choose the "Select New Music Driver" option and press <Enter>.
5. Highlight the Roland Sound Canvas - General Midi option and press
<Enter>.
6. Choose the last option "Return to Main Menu" and press <Enter>.
7. Make sure the new settings work by selecting both "Play Music
Test" and "Play Sound Test", hitting <Enter> after each selection.
8. If you don't hear music, check to make sure the music I/O port
address in the "Advanced Sound Options" menu matches your Roland
Sound Canvas - General Midi card.
9. Highlight the "Save Settings and Exit" option and press <Enter>
to continue with Setup.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
About Hardware Compatibility
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* Can I use SPACE ADVENTURE 2 on my laptop display?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 requires a color VGA monitor to display its
high-resolution images. It will not work on the internal plasma or
LCD monitors on laptop PCs. Most laptops, however, have a connector
for an external monitor, and SPACE ADVENTURE 2 will work fine with
your laptop hooked to an external VGA monitor. SPACE ADVENTURE 2
will run fine on certain laptop screens, such as the Toshiba 4400SXC,
COMPAQ LTE's and the PC BRAND NB486slc which have 256 shades of grey
or color screens. The only problem will be that the right edge of
the screen will be slightly cut off. This is due to the fact that
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 runs in the extra high resolution VGA video mode of
360 x 480 pixels with 256 colors and most of the internal laptop
screens can only display 320 pixels in width.
* Will SPACE ADVENTURE 2 run on my CGA, EGA, or MONO display?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 requires a VGA card and monitor, thus it will not
run on these monitors.
* What do I do if my computer has 16MB of RAM and it locks up when I
try to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2?
On some machines with 16MB or more of RAM you may encounter a lock-up
when you try to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2. You will know this has
happened if nothing displays on your screen after the KA Interactive
Book Engine copyright message. To fix this problem edit the KA.CNF
file in the C:\SPACE2 directory or click on the SPACE ADVENTURE 2
configuration icon in Windows and change the ExtraMemory line from
Automatic to None. For more information consult the Changing Program
Defaults without Setup section.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
About Software Compatibility
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* I get the message "There is not enough memory to start this program.
Remove any memory-resident programs to free more memory (RAM)."
What's wrong?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 requires approximately 520KB of RAM in order to
run. Even when there is adequate total RAM to run the program, there
may be conflicts with other programs occupying memory. If you
experience difficulty in running SPACE ADVENTURE 2 under these
circumstances, please remove other memory resident programs from
memory. In MS-DOS versions 5.0 and above type MEM /C to see what
programs and drivers are loaded in memory. To verify the RAM
available, look for "Largest executable program size" parameter in K.
In MS-DOS version 6.0 and above try running the MEMMAKER program to
free more conventional RAM. QEMM386 users, please run the OPTIMIZE
program that came with QEMM. 386MAX users, please run the MAXIMIZE
program that came with 386MAX. For more information about
conventional memory and memory management please consult your DOS
manual.
* What do I do if I have problems with CD-ROM Cache programs?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 program files are already configured for optimal
performance of your CD-ROM drive. Using a CD-ROM cache program such
as Microsoft's SmartDrive, Norton's Speed Drive, Central Point's
PC-Cache, Speedway, or any other CD-ROM cache will actually degrade
performance due to the large file sizes. It is recommended that you
disable the cache for best performance.
* I installed SPACE ADVENTURE 2 and said yes to run under Windows, but
no icons appeared in Windows 3.1x. What's wrong?
Go to the File menu of Program Manager (or your replacement Windows
shell), choose Run and type KAGROUP at the command prompt and press
<Enter>. If the icons do not appear, try exiting Windows and
re-installing. Winmate users may have to manually create icons,
consult your Winmate manual for creating icons for DOS applications.
For Windows 95 see installing DOS based programs under Windows 95.
* When I try to run SPACE ADVENTURE 2 from Windows 3.1x I get the message
Application still Active. Quit the application before quitting Windows.
What's wrong?
To avoid possible complications under the Windows 3.1x environment,
clicking on the SPACE ADVENTURE 2 icon will actually shut down
Windows 3.1x, run SPACE ADVENTURE 2, then re-start Windows 3.1x on exit
from SPACE ADVENTURE 2. Windows 3.1x can't shut down because other DOS
applications are running in the background. Switch to any other
running DOS applications and exit them normally, then click on the
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 icon again. If you have Windows 3.1x applications
already running, they will be shut down and you will be asked to save
any unsaved data.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ

ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* Is there a way to change certain defaults in SPACE ADVENTURE 2?
Yes. You can change the default configurations by running SETUP to
alter the KA.CNF file in your SPACE2 directory. To change these
options, run SETUP from C:\SPACE2 directory on your hard disk, select
the appropriate sound device, and select either "Advanced Sound
Options" or "Miscellaneous Options". To change the defaults, press
<Enter> on the appropriate option and select the desired new setting
from the options listed. Some options require you to press the space
bar to toggle between options. A description of both menus is listed
below.
* Can I run SETUP from Windows?
No, you must exit Windows 3.1x to run SETUP. With Windows 95 you must go
to the MS-DOS prompt. It must be set to not allow DOS programs to detect
Windows. See installing DOS based programs under Windows 95.
Setup's Advanced Sound Options Menu:
Select New Sound Device: This option allows you to select a new sound
card driver.
Sound Card I/O Port: Select the correct I/O port used by your sound
device. You need not change these default parameters unless you have
changed the factory settings on your sound device.
Sound Card IRQ: Select the correct IRQ setting used by your sound
device. You need not change these default parameters unless you have
changed the factory settings on your sound device.
Sound Card DMA: Select the correct DMA setting used by your sound
device. You need not change these default parameters unless you have
changed the factory settings on your sound device.
Digitized Sound: This option can be set to either ON or OFF. Turning
it off disables sound but not music.
Sound Volume: Controls the loudness of the digital sound (narration
and sound effects). The higher the number the louder the sound.
(Note: functions only on sound cards with software volume control
capability, like the Sound Blaster Pro.)
Sound Device Driver: States the path to the sound device driver used
by your sound device. If changed, corresponding Sound Card I/O Port,
IRQ, and DMA may be required. This is normally set automatically
when you choose a sound card.
Select New Music Device: This option allows you to use your Roland
Sound Card for music if you have one, otherwise it uses your current
sound card.
Music I/O Port: Select the correct Music I/O port setting used by
your sound device. You need not change these default parameters
unless you have changed the factory settings on your sound device.
Music: This setting can be ON or OFF. This will turn musical
accompaniment on or off throughout the entire game. The Alt-M
feature will not function when set to OFF.
Music Volume: This setting changes the overall music volume.
Hushed Music Volume: Type a value from 1 to 100; the lower the
number, the softer the music volume while digitized sounds are
playing. This setting does not change the overall music volume;
music volume is altered only while digitized sounds are being played.
Music Device Driver: States the path to the music device driver used
by your sound device. If changed, corresponding Music Card I/O Port
may be required. This is normally set automatically when you choose
Setup's Miscellaneous Options Menu:
Play Movies Automatically: This setting allows you to decide whether
you want movies to start up automatically.
Cache CD-ROM to Hard Drive: This setting allows you to run mouse
movies faster by allocating space on your hard drive for memory
usage.
Use XMS Memory: Select Automatic or None to indicate if you want the
program to use extra memory or not.
Printer Port: Select LPT1 or LPT2 to indicate which printer port your
printer is hooked up to. Printers that connect to a serial port are
not supported by this option.
Printing: Select Detect to indicated whether you want the program to
automatically detect if your printer is available. Select None to
disable the printing feature of this program.
Mouse Sensitivity: Type a value from 1 to 100; the lower the number,
the less sensitive your mouse is to your movements. Lower numbers
make it easier for younger children to handle the mouse.
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ

Most of the time, running SETUP.EXE in your C:\SPACE2 directory is
the best way to change program defaults, because it offers you an
easy to use menu.
If SETUP isn't solving your problem, you can edit the KA.CNF file
directly, by typing EDIT KA.CNF in your C:\SPACE2 directory, or by
clicking on the SPACE ADVENTURE 2 Config icon if you are running
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 under Windows.
A description of some of the settings is listed below. If you need a
complete description of all the settings, you can call our tech
support line and request a FAX explaining all statements in the
KA.CNF.
SoundDevice. Type None or the name of the sound device you have
hooked up.
Music. Type On or Off to turn the musical accompaniment on or off.
Digitized Sound. Type On or Off to turn the digitized sound (words)

About Video Problems
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* If you encounter distorted video problems such as stripes or blocks
on the screen you may have an incompatible video card. The best way
to determine this is to press <Ctrl-C> or <Alt-F4> to exit the
program. If you exit SPACE ADVENTURE 2 and return to a DOS prompt,
you most likely do have a video card problem. You should contact
your video card manufacturer and inquire about any possible problems
with a 360 x 480 by 256 color overscan video mode.
If you are not sure what video card you have, contact your computer
manufacturer or the store at which you bought your computer. Older
STB Powergraph cards have this problem and can be corrected by
upgrading to a newer video BIOS. Some newer 64 bit video cards (S3
based), such as the #9GXE64Pro, may need a special TSR from the
manufacturer and may also be available on the Knowledge Adventure
BBS. If pressing <Ctrl-C> or <Alt-F4> only causes more video
distortion then the problem is probably not video card related but is
a text-based program trying to display an error message on top of the
picture. Try pressing R meaning retry for a disk error or reboot for
an expanded memory manager conflict. If you wish to see the actual
message try hitting the printscreen button and checking your printer.
If this doesn't work, reboot your computer and get to a DOS prompt.
Make sure that your printer is on and press <Ctrl-PrtScr> once. This
will start a capture of DOS messages to your printer. Run SPACE
ADVENTURE 2 again. After the video distortion appears look at your
printout for the error message, it should be the last thing on the
page. Press <Ctrl-PtrScr> again or reboot to disable the printer
capture. At this point you may have a hardware problem or a software
conflict. Before calling the hardware manufacturer you may wish to
try a "clean boot" to avoid software conflicts. You may need to move
some DIP switches on your video card. For example, if you see
horizontal stripes on the screen while using Headland Technology's
Video-7 VRAM card to display VGA graphics, move DIP switch number 8
to the position opposite the one that it is currently in. This will
enable IBM nonstandard video modes to display correctly without
affecting the operation of your other software. If you need help
with a clean boot, try calling our BBS at (818) 248-0166 and read the
bulletins section, or call technical support at (818) 249-0212 and
request the clean boot procedures FAX.
* When I try to install SPACE ADVENTURE 2 I get a message stating that
I do not have a VGA system, but I do. What's wrong?
During INSTALL, press <ENTER> if you get a message stating that you
do not have a VGA system. If you receive a similar message while
executing SPACE ADVENTURE 2, please contact Compaq Technical Support
for a patch program that will correct this problem with some early
model Prolineas.

About Windows 3.1x Problems
ƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒƒ
* My newly installed SPACE ADVENTURE 2 program works beautifully under
Windows 3.1x but some of my older Knowledge Adventure programs don't.
What can I do about this?
SPACE ADVENTURE 2 comes with an additional utility program called
KAWIN.EXE that actually closes down Windows 3.1x, runs SPACE ADVENTURE 2
from DOS, and then restarts Windows 3.1x for you. To set up older
Knowledge Adventure programs with KAWIN.EXE (we will use AMERICA
ADVENTURE for the examples) you must first copy KAWIN.EXE and
KAWIN.TXT to the other program's directory (e.g. C:\AMERICA). Then
edit the program's batch file to include commands to change to the
drive and directory of the program. For example, edit the
AMERICA.BAT file to look like the following:
@echo off <existing>
C: <ADD THIS: drive letter where program is>
CD\AMERICA <ADD THIS: change to program directory>
After this you are ready to change the Command Line for the icon in
Windows 3.1x. Click on the program icon so that it is highlighted.
Then go to the File menu and choose Properties. Change the Command
Line to run KAWIN.EXE from the program's directory followed by the name
of the batch file to run the program (e.g. C:\AMERICA\KAWIN.EXE
AMERICA.BAT). Note: Do NOT include the full path to the batch file
or it will not work! If all went well you will see that the icon for
the program has changed. To put the icon back to normal go back to
the File menu and choose Properties again. This time choose Change
Icon and click OK on the error message. Then click on Browse double
click on the program's .ICO file (e.g. AMERICA.ICO).
Note: KAWin.exe does not work in Windows 95!

* Can I setup SPACE ADVENTURE 2 to work under OS/2?
Knowledge Adventure programs work best under DOS. For optimum
performance boot from DOS using your dual boot, boot manager, or DOS
boot disk. If you run under OS/2 make sure you are in a DOS full
screen. Below are some settings that will help performance in a DOS
fullscreen session. Even with these settings you may encounter some
difficulties.

INT_DURINT_IO ON
VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP OFF
VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION OFF
DOS_HIGH ON
DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION OFF
HW_ROM_TO_RAM ON

* How can I print the graphic images?
NOTE: Images in this product may not be reproduced or transmitted in
any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including
photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval
system, without permission in writing from the publisher.
To print images, use the -v option with SPACE2.BAT. (First make sure
that you have at least 550KB of lower RAM available, as capturing
images takes a little more memory. Unload any unnecessary TSR
programs. To see how much memory is available, type MEM and press
<Enter>.)
Type:
C: and press <Enter>
CD \SPACE2 and press <Enter>
SPACE2 -V and press <Enter>
You can then capture a graphic by pressing <Ctrl-PrtScr> to create a
bit-mapped file called SCREEN0.BMP. (Make sure you turn off any sound
or music that is playing before you press <Ctrl-PrtScr>.) Press
<Ctrl-PrtScr> again to create SCREEN1.BMP, and so on. These
bit-mapped files can be retrieved and printed from within many
graphics programs. You will find these files in your
C:\SPACE2\SPACE2 directory.
The video capture program supplied with SPACE ADVENTURE 2 was
designed to capture images displayed in the 360 x 480 video mode used
in the Reference Section of the product. It will not work in THE
ADVENTURERS, the SPACE ADVENTURE 2 Space Theatre, or the Rotor.
* Can I use my digitizing tablet with SPACE ADVENTURE 2?
No. Digitizing tablets are not supported by SPACE ADVENTURE 2. If
you are using a digitizing tablet and it is not functioning properly,
unplug the tablet, plug in a Microsoft compatible mouse, and restart
SPACE ADVENTURE 2. Your tablet manufacturer may be able to provide a
software solution to any problems experienced.
